The Golden Pothos, scientifically known as Epipremnum Aureum, is an iconic and immensely popular houseplant, arguably the easiest climbing vine to successfully cultivate indoors. Its charming, heart-shaped leaves are painted with striking streaks of cream and luminous gold, a variegation that makes it a vibrant focal point in any room.

Commonly nicknamed Devil's Ivy due to its incredible resilience and ability to thrive even in low light, this robust plant is perfect for beginners. The Pothos naturally grows in a long, trailing fashion, making it ideal for high shelves, mantles, or hanging baskets where its luxurious foliage can create a dramatic, cascading display.

Beyond its beauty, the Golden Pothos is one of the most effective air-purifying plants, scientifically proven to filter common household toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene, creating a cleaner, healthier indoor environment.

Plant Care

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal for promoting fast growth and maintaining the bright yellow/gold variegation. It is highly adaptable and will survive in low-light conditions, but growth will slow, and the leaves may revert to solid green. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Humidity

Tolerant of average indoor humidity (35-50%), but will thrive in higher humidity (50-70%). Consider placing it in a well-lit bathroom or grouping it with other plants to naturally increase moisture.

Soil

Use a fast-draining, well-aerated potting mix. A blend formulated for aroids or a standard potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or orchid bark for added drainage is perfect to prevent root rot.

Watering

Bright, indirect light is ideal for promoting fast growth and maintaining the bright yellow/gold variegation. It is highly adaptable and will survive in low-light conditions, but growth will slow, and the leaves may revert to solid green. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Fertalizer

Feed monthly during the active growing season (Spring and Summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or suspend feeding during the fall and winter months.

Origin and History

The Epipremnum Aureum, commonly known as the Golden Pothos, is a vibrant evergreen liana native to the humid, forested islands of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific, including the Solomon Islands. As a member of the Araceae family (Aroids), it shares kinship with popular plants like Philodendrons and Monsteras.

A key factor in its renown is its complex taxonomic history. For over a century, botanists struggled to assign the plant its proper genus, resulting in multiple discarded scientific names. The plant we now call Epipremnum Aureum was once widely circulated under different monikers, including:

  • Pothos aureus (where it gets its common name)
  • Scindapsus aureus
  • Rhaphidophora aurea

It was not until the 1960s, after a mature flowering specimen (inflorescence) was finally studied, that it was officially classified into the Epipremnum genus. The juvenile form we see in homes is a root-climber that, in its native habitat, can scale trees up to 65 feet, transforming its small, variegated leaves into much larger, sometimes fenestrated (holey) mature foliage upon reaching the canopy. Its success and hardiness have allowed it to naturalize across tropical regions globally, where it is sometimes considered an invasive species.

Common FAQs

Where should I put my golden pothos?

Place your Golden Pothos in a location that receives bright, indirect light, such as near a north or east-facing window, or a few feet away from a sunny south or west window. It is an excellent choice for high spaces like shelves or mantles, allowing its vines to trail freely, or it can be trained to climb a moss pole or trellis. It is especially well-suited for offices and bathrooms due to its tolerance for lower light and variable humidity.

How long do golden pothos grow?

As an indoor houseplant, the Golden Pothos can live for decades with proper care, especially if regularly propagated. The vines themselves are fast-growing, sometimes adding 12 to 18 inches per month and growing longer than 65 feet in the right conditions! You can easily control its length by pruning the vines just above a leaf node, which also encourages the plant to become fuller and bushier.

Are golden pothos rare?

No, the Golden Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum) is one of the most common and readily available houseplants worldwide. Its popularity stems from its ease of care and adaptability. While the "Golden" variety is widespread, there are many rarer Pothos cultivars (like 'Manjula' or 'Jessenia') that command higher prices and are less frequently found in stores.

Does golden pothos clean the air?

Yes. The Golden Pothos is renowned for its air-purifying capabilities. Based on studies by NASA and other environmental research, it is highly effective at filtering common indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene, helping to improve the overall air quality of your home or office.

What is golden pothos good for?

The Golden Pothos is beneficial for several reasons:

  • Aesthetics: Its cascading growth habit and yellow-splashed leaves provide lush, dynamic décor.
  • Beginner Friendly: It is incredibly forgiving and tolerant of missed waterings or less-than-ideal lighting, making it the perfect "starter plant."
  • Air Health: It actively filters common indoor air pollutants.
  • Cultural Symbolism: In many Asian cultures, including through the practice of Feng Shui, the Pothos (sometimes called the Money Plant) is believed to attract wealth, prosperity, and good luck.
